The traveller's guide

Trenitalia offers targeted, convenient and value-for-money services for frequent train travellers.

REDUCTIONS FOR THE CHILDREN

children younger than 4 travel free of charge in both first and second class but they do not have the right to a seat. Children still under 12 (considered as the day after the birthday), can occupy a seat, travelling for 50% off and 30% off in WL and CC. Not valid on the trenOK services

FAMILIA OFFER

Offer for journeys of family groups made up of from 3- 5 persons made up of at least 1 adult and 1 child of less than 12 years, includes ticket booking (free) and allows a discount of 20% (only for adult passengers) and 50% off (30% for couchettes and WL) for children with respect to the standard fare. The minimum price is 10 euro, subject to the minimum fares applied to the train used.
The offer has limited seats availability, which vary according to day, train and class.

Trains you can use this solution on: AV, T-Biz, ES*, ES* City, IC Plus, IC, ICN, Express, couchettes and WL.

Booking
It is free and made at the same time as the ticket.

Booking change
Can be made for twice from the day of issuance until the train's departure time, for the places available under the Family offer at any ticket office or travel agency (for Ticketless solutions, the agency at which the ticket was bought), using the self service machines, on this site, by calling our Call Center on 89 20 21. The same procedure applies also to the Ticketless tickets, in which case the change is allowed only with the ticketless system without the possibility of printing the card ticket.

The booking change is free. Agencies may charge a commission for this service. If there are no places available under the Family offer, ticket changes must be made with the same time limits, by paying the price difference with respect to the full Standard Fare and the change fee, by approaching the ticket desks and authorized travel agencies only.

Ticket change
Possible only once from the issue date until the train's departure at any ticket office or travel agency by paying the change fee of 20% of the ticket, with a maximum of 3 euro.
The changing of tickets bought on this site is not possible online and it is possible only for amounts that are the same or higher; to effect a change, you must first pick up the printed ticket or, for ticketless tickets, go directly to the station ticket desks or issuing agency

Refunds
Can be requested only until the train's departure, for a charge of 20%. Requests for the printed tickets can be made at any ticket office or the issuing travel agency. No refunds are given after the train's departure. No provision is made for any refunds if the amount the customer is entitled to is equal to or less than 8 euro, net of charges. Refunds for journey interruptions are not allowed.
For tickets bought online and not yet picked up, you can request a refund - only before departure - using the on-line refund service on this site (only for refunds of the full purchase), by calling Trenitalia's Call Center, or by sending an e-mail to rimborsi@trenitalia.it.
After pick up(not applicable to ticketless solutions) , instead, you must present the printed train ticket at any station ticket counter, which will forward it to the appropriate office. Refunds are made by refund on the credit card used for the purchase.

For ticketless tickets bought from travel agencies, refunds can be requested - only before departure - from the issuing agency or at a ticket desk or, if the agency is closed, by contacting the Trenitalia Call Center on 892021, which will authorise the Agency to refund afterwards. Refunds are granted subject to a photocopy of the applicant's ID document being shown.

Access to other trains
Holders of Family tickets can, for the same journey, also travel directly on another train of the same type or different type, or 1st class or other service on the same day and until 24 hours after the booked train's departure by paying of the difference between the full price for the train used and the amount already paid the penalty of 8 euro, provided tickets are validated and the on-board personnel is notified and as soon as possible. If in the three hours afterwards there are no other trains of the same type, customers can travel at same conditions stated above also afterwards, on the first train of the same or lower category available for arriving at destination.
If the amount already paid is equal to or greater than that payable for the train used, no charge will be made, but passengers are not however entitled to refunds of any amount possibly paid as extra. Whatever the case, tickets must be validated before boarding otherwise passengers will be liable to pay an 8 euro fine (this penalty is added to the one owed for boarding a different train). If found travelling on other days from those allowed, travellers are considered as being without a ticket.Holders of the ticketless tickets are not allowed to travel on the Regional trains and, if found on board, will be dealt with as if they had no ticket at all.

GREEN CARD ("CARTA VERDE")

If you are younger than 26 years, you can buy (for 40 euro and for the validity of 12 months) the "Carta Verde", which is issued in conjunction with the international RAILPLUS Card and which entitles you:

buy tickets in 1st and 2nd class for the Italy-only services with 10% off the Couchette and Wagon Lit service and 15% off all the other trains including the Eurostar Italia, TBiz and Eurostar Italia AV. The price of the Excelsior carriages and the Excelsior E4 cabins, the booking fee and the prices for the additional services (catering, car on board, etc.) are payable in full.
to benefit from the reduced "Card" fare with a discount of about 25% on all the international connections at overall prices connecting to Italy (except the "Salvador Dalì" train of the Elipsos company);
to 25% off all international European connections at the TCV tariff for the routes of the Railway companies taking part in the Railplus offer. The seat booking fee and the couchette and WL supplement are payable in full.


SILVER CARD ("CARTA D'ARGENTO")

If you have reached 60 years, you can buy (for 30 euro and valid 12 months) the "Carta d'Argento", which is issued in conjunction with the international RAILPLUS card and which entitles you to:

buy tickets in 1st and 2nd class for the Italy-only services with 10% off the Couchette and Wagon Lit service and 15% off all the other trains including the Eurostar Italia, TBiz and Eurostar Italia AV. CLICK AND GIVE WITH TRENITALIA

This initiative lets you give a railway tickets as gifts for journeys on medium- and long-distance trains when purchased on this website (with the express exception of Travelcards).

Along the on-line purchasing route, select the option "Click and Give", on the Price page.

After completing the buying procedure and after payment, the system will ask you for the data of the recipient. Afterwards the system will send to the recipient and mail or SMS containing the journey Code; this is used for picking up the ticket according to the normal purchasing procedures.

You can ask for the service with Ticketless procedure or have the tickets picked up at the self-service tellers in the departure stations.

The gift ticket cannot be delivered to people's homes or offices.

Tickets bought through this offer are subject to the rules of the sales channel used and the train service - in particular to the rules on changes, refunds for delays and malfunctioning of the air conditioning system.

"EUROSTAR LINK" OFFER

This initiative is for all passengers who buy a ticket valid for the service Eurostar Link that combines the journey with a Eurostar Italia train and a luxury bus. Please note that the ticket must be bought on the Internet directly on this site, or through the Telephone Ticket Service (on 89 20 21 - Option 2 to be dialled without area code in Italy from land line and from mobile phones and active every day from 7.00 to 21.00), or from the ticket desks, travel agencies or self-service tellers. Please note that it is NOT possible to purchase the ticket with the ticketless procedure or on board the trains.
The offer makes provision for buying only one ticket connecting with Siena, Ravenna, Belluno/Bassano del Grappa, Piombino, Taranto and Macerata for all the ES* connections with Florence, Bologna, Padua, Bari and Ancona.
Tickets are valid for the day and the train/service booked.
The bus service can be sold individually. In this case, tickets are valid for the day and service booked and need not be validated (stamped).
Before departure of the first train/service booked, you can make two booking changes of all the trains/services booked, without paying any surcharge.
After the departure of the first train/service booked and within three hours afterwards, you can request only one booking change for both the tickets not used or only of the train/service not yet used.
The change via telephone and on-line is possible only for tickets for buses.
Changing a ticket for another one is only possible before departure once, paying the change fee of 20% with the maximum of 3 euro. Changes of tickets bought on this site cannot be made on-line. To change them, you must previously pick up the printed ticket and they are allowed only for equal or higher amounts

Refunds are allowed for a fee of 20% before departure of the first train/service booked.
After the departure of the first train/service booked and within three hours afterwards, refunds are granted with a deduction charge of 50%. After this time limit, tickets are no longer refundable.
No refunds are granted if the amount to pay, net of charges (20% or 50%), is less than or equal to 8 euro.
Bonuses for delays or non-functioning of the air conditioning systems only apply to tickets on Eurostar trains.
The tickets issued take part in the "Puntiviaggio" (travel points gathering) under Trenitalia's CartaViaggio scheme.

GROUPS

For groups of at least ten persons travelling together.
For journeys on the Espressi (Express), IC, ICN, IC Plus, ES* City, ES*, AV and T-Biz trains or in couchette carriages or wagon lits, the following reduction applies:
- 10% in first and second class for journeys made by from 10 to 49 paying persons on Fridays and Sundays, and 20% for the remaining days;
- 10% in first and second class for journeys made by 50 and more paying persons on Fridays and Sundays, and 30% for the remaining days.
Place booking is compulsory and free.
For journeys of groups made on the Regional trains, the 10% reduction applies irrespective of the journey day. Place booking is optional; in the case of booking request, the reduced amount of 1.55 euro must be paid.
The reductions for youngsters from 4 to 12 years are applicable to the reduced prices for groups.
The offer is valid is for both 1st and 2nd class.
The groups discounts can be not applicable or limited for certain medium- and long-distance trains during busy periods and for certain Regional trains, or for certain routes operated by Regional trains.
You can book at all the station ticket desks and Trenitalia's authorised travel agencies.

SCHOOL GROUP ITALY


For made up of at least 10 students. The offer allows a reduction of 30% on all days of the week except Fridays and Sundays on Espressi (Express), Intercity, Intercity Notte (night), Intercity Plus, Eurostar City, ES*, AV, T-Biz trains and to travel with couchette and WL services; for school groups travelling on Friday and Sunday on the same trains, the reduction is 10%.
The ticket price includes place booking.
For school groups of at least 10 persons travelling on the Regional trains, the reduction of 10% applies irrespective of the journey day.
A free ticket is also allowed for an accompanying person, teacher or parent for every 15 paying students with a maximum of 5: for example, a group of at least 75 students is entitled to 5 accompanying persons free.

CARTA BLU

those with physical or mental disabilities or those with right to accompanying persons. The Card is valid for five years and entitles the accompanying person to travel free (a ticket for two is issued). For journeys on the ES*, AV, TBiz, ES* City trains and with WL and couchette service, you must pay for, respectively, a ticket for an ES*, AV, ES* City or Tbiz journey and a service change for IC/ES* or IC/AV or IC/ES* City or IC/Tbiz (for ES* or AV or ES/ City or TBiz trains), or for a ticket for the WL or couchette service and a couchette or WL service change at the full price (for the couchette or WL service).

REGIONAL/PROVINCIAL TRAVELCARDS

for everyone. These allow an unlimited number of journeys on the ordinary trains (Express, Inter-regional, Direct, Regional and Suburban) and for routes within the regional/provincial fare boundaries.
Their validity differs according to type. For Travelcards purchased on this site and valid solely for the regional trains, see the dedicated paragraph.

REGIONAL/PROVINCIAL TRAVELCARDS WITH CROSS-REGIONAL APPLICATION

For all, allowing unlimited travel on the ordinary trains (Express trains, Regional) and for journeys between 2 or more regions.
Their validity differs according to type.
For Travelcards purchased on this site and valid solely for the regional trains, see the dedicated paragraph.

WEEKLY, MONTHLY AND YEARLY TRAVELCARDS

For everyone. Allow, for a week, month or 12 months, unlimited travel in first or second class only on the ordinary (Express , Regional and Suburban trains) journey of up to 250 km beyond regional/provincial fare boundaries. For Travelcards purchased on this site and valid solely for the regional trains, see the dedicated paragraph.

ORDINARY AND REGIONAL TRAVELCARDS PURCHASED ON THE WEBSITE AND PRINTED FROM ONE'S COMPUTER

to travel solely on the regional trains (Regional). They may be weekly, monthly and two-weekly (the latter only in the Friuli Region) and are printed directly starting from one's own computer
It is not possible to buy weekly Travelcards for cross-regional departure/arrival journeys.
The e-mail bearing the layout of the Travelcard bought must be shown on the train together with a valid identity document.

TRAVELCARDS AND ADMISSION CARDS TO THE IC TRAINS

Travelcards are issued for routes up to 1000 km in both first and second class.
Admission Cards are issued as supports to Ordinary Travelcards or regional with cross-regional validity (AS 40) up to 250 km or to regional Travelcards for distances of to 350 km.
Both are valid for one week (from Monday to Sunday) or a month (calendar) and allow an unlimited number of journeys on the IC trains. In some regional areas and for the use of certain IC trains, the use of Special Admission Cards is allowed.
These cards are not valid for travelling on ES*, ES*city or AV trains.

In some regions (Piedmont, Lombardy, Liguria, Emilia Romagna) ICPass cards have been set up which allow Regional-fare Travelcard holders to access second class only of the trains classified IC, IC Plus, ICN and EC for routes in Italy without having to pay any price difference.

For national routes of the IC Plus- and EuroCity trains for which provision is made for tickets to be issued with place reservation, access is allowed but a place is not guaranteed. The IC Pass cards do non allow access to Eurostar*, ES* City, AV and CIS trains run with ETR 500 carriages classified as ES* City (subject to the exceptions for journeys of the Milan-Domodossola and Milan-Chiasso sections in both directions).
Holders of free passes issued by the Lombardy regional administration cannot access the CIS trains run with ETR 470 carriages and classified as ES* City (subject to the exceptions for journeys of the Milan-Domodossola and Milan-Chiasso sections in both directions).
To travel on the IC Plus trains travelcard holders for the IC trains can board directly but without guarantee of a place. You can alternatively book a place by paying 1 euro for each journey for distances up to 300 km and 2 euro for longer journeys; Alternatively you can buy a Bookings Booklet ("carnet ICPlus") costing € 15.00 for both first and second class. It is valid for 6 months for 20 bookings on IC Plus on the chosen section. To travel instead on the ES*, AV or ES* City trains, passengers must buy a 2 euro admission ticket for each journey. This includes seat booking and is valid for both first and second class. Provision is made for admission fees without guarantee of place only on the AV trains for services taking in the Rome-Naples section in both directions. Bookings without guarantee of a place can only be made at the station ticket points and approved travel agencies.

IC travelcard holders can also buy a Bookings Booklet ("carnet di prenotazioni") costing 40 euro for first and second class to make 20 bookings for ES*, AV or ES*city trains for the chosen route section (except for the Rome-Naples section) to use within six months from the Booklet's validation date. For journeys taking in the Rome-Naples section in both directions, you can buy a booklet costing 40 euro for first and second class and valid for making 20 bookings only for ES*, or a booklet costing 60 euro for both classes and valid for making 20 bookings on both ES* and AV services.
Only on the AV trains for the services taking in the Rome-Naples section in both directions, holders of this €60 Carnet can book trains for the dates requested without a place booking. Bookings without guarantee of a place can only be made at the station ticket points and approved travel agencies.

For all types, the carnet can be bought 7 days in advance of the date they become valid. The carnet is nominal, strictly personal and cannot be replace or refunded. Booking changes are allowed up to twice (2x) for free until the booked train's departure and once only (1x) within the 3 hours following the booked train's departure. The new booking can also be made for a different category train provided it comes within those provied for by the carnet. It must however in all cases refer to a journey that is to be made within the time validity of the carnet. When travelling on board, passengers are obliged to show inspection personnel their carnet, travel card and seat/place booking.

Travelcard holders can also buy a Card booklet of admission rights made up of 20 vouchers at a reduced price of 1.55 euro for both a First and Second class place (on the AV trains for journeys including the Rome-Naples section in both directions, the use of these booklet is not possible). The individual tickets can be replaced with an admission ticket for Travelcard holders with seat reservation before departure. Travelcard holders who are not interested in having the certainty of a seat can board the train without replacing the coupon ("tagliando") of the Booklet but they must however remember to stamp it before boarding. The coupon ("tagliando") loses its validity on the train's arrival at the destination station. The individual tickets are not refundable.
Holders of any other type of Travelcard, including those at the "41/5/Unico" tariff, are allowed on the ES*, AV, ES* City trains for a single journey after paying the related service change. Travelcards bought online are not valid in conjunction with Admission Cards of any type nor, where present, in conjunction with IC Pass cards.
