Available all year, the "Car on board" service is offered by Trenitalia on the main national and international night connections. You can travel with your car starting from 17 cities to comfortably and safety reach Italy's main destinations.

Where and when buy the service

Booking of the service car on board is compulsory and can be made only at the station ticket desks or at the travel agencies taking part in the scheme.
Booking can be made from two months (three months for departures between 1 June – 30 September) until 3 hours before departure.
You can immediately book also your return journey, provided the it takes place within three months from the date of the request (four months for departures between 1 June – 30 September).
Together with buying the car slip, the customer must buy or own a journey ticket valid for the same section, which must be shown to the Trenitalia personnel during train-loading check-in.



The cars that can be carried

When buying the slip, customers must notify the ticket office or agency operator of their vehicles' dimensions - displayed on the licence documents.

Cars must not exceed the following dimensions:

Length m. 7,00


Caution: if when loading, the vehicle does not come within the above dimensions, it will not possible to provide the transport service.



Only on some routes (served with closed vehicle cars) it is possible to transport vehicles that exceeding the dimensions indicated. For more information, contact the ticket desks and travel agencies.

In order to travel, the cars must meet the following parameters: 
not have more than 8 seats (in addition to that of the driver)
be registered and be delivered in efficient state of working order
meet the prescribed conditions for the purposes of the Transport (radio aerials retracted or removed, windows and deflectors closed, lights off, acoustic anti-theft systems off, hood blocked, no cover or other materials flapping in any luggage spaces, no strange protuberances).
during the journey, those accompanying the vehicle (and any animals on board) cannot go to the car or access the carriage it has been loaded onto.



Caution: if, when loading, the vehicle does not meet one or more of the requirements, it will not possible to carry out the Transport.




Vehicle loading and unloading

The boarding times (shown also on the car slip) vary depending on the train used and can be read in the connections section of this website.
The vehicle loading/unloading operations are carried out only by personnel indicated by Trenitalia, also through the personnel of supplier companies.
The vehicle handing-over operations start after about 60 minutes from the train's arrival.


Insurance against baggage theft

The ticket price also includes free insurance coverage against baggage theft*.
The policy covers theft of luggage from inside the vehicles loaded on the train, with the exclusion of professional tools, portable electronic equipment, photographic apparatus and similar, valuables, cash, and credit/debit/cashpoint cards. in general.

Coverage has a ceiling of 1,040.00 euro per vehicle The Ceiling of 1,040.00 euro covered by baggage theft insurance is divided as follows:
or suitcases or similar, up to 260.00 euro per case (for a maximum of 2 cases);
for the other items, the market value up to a maximum of 260.00 euro per item (for example strollers, skis).

 Travellers who have been the subject of a theft from their vehicle under the conditions of the policy must notify it immediately to Trenitalia personnel. Within 3 days from the arrival of the train they must also present official report to the police.
Within 15 days from the theft, they must also present Trenitalia with the refund request, delivering it to the destination station or, by surface mail, at this address:

In the case of submission by surface mail, the postage stamp date will be used as the reference date. Along with their request, passengers must enclose their copy of their Police Report (Denuncia) and the original tickets of the traveller and of the car on board. If the tickets have been stolen together with the luggage, you must make this clear in Police Report of theft. The Report statement should therefore also state the date and train used for the car transport.
