Trains for local transport

The fleet

The local transport fleet is made up overall of about 4,800 carriages, 800 locomotives and over 2,200 light stock (electric and diesel locomotives with towed carriages).

Trains purpose-built for the local and metropolitan mobility are the 99 "TAFs" which are already operating. These units, for intensive passenger flow, have gradually been flanked by the new Minuettos since 2004 and these latter trains are due to rise in number to 200.

The train fleet is also evolving with the new "Vivalto" double-deck carriages, constantly being built and delivered. There will be 300 new carriages by 2006 and the final number will be 450. This will make up a total of 90 trains, with a passenger-carrying capacity of about 500 (800 in the busiest sections).

A special role is given among the locomotives to the E464. This has been designed for the needs of short to medium distances as it resists the wear and tear of frequent stops and accelerates quickly. Some 388 units have been ordered of which 240 are already operating.

But Trenitalia's pledge to improving journey comfort doesn't end with buying new locomotives. Re-investments are being made on the existing passenger fleet. Before 2006, 88% of the seats will be renewed and 76% of the carriages will be properly air-conditioned.
