While possible and convenient all year round, this option is especially popular during holiday period: so hop on a train without missing out on the convenience of your car!
The "Auto al seguito" (Car on Board) service allows you to travel comfortably in a Sleeper or Seat Carriage, reach your destination avoiding the stress of driving and traffic queues, while, on arrival, having the convenience and freedom of using your own car.

The "car on board" service is offered by Trenitalia on all main rail connections, both national and international. Visit the Timetable Section of this site to see the routes providing this service.

On the trains with cars on board, passengers can travel in Couchettes, Sleeper Carriages or in seated compartments.
Passengers can also choose to travel on a different train than the one carrying their car (Intercity Night and Express, IC and ES*). To pick-up your car, a simple written approvel to a person you trust is enough.

Booking the car-on-board service may be done at any of the approved stations or at one of the authorised travel agencies.

Booking is compulsory and can be made from as early as two months (three in summer) and as late as seven hours before departure. At the same time you can also book your return journey provided the departure date is within three months of the booking date.

All car owners who use the "Car on board" service are entitled, within 30 days of sending their car, to free breakdown service. ACI members also have a 10% off the price of their car's ticket.

On an experimental and provisional basis, passengers can use a free insurance coverage against the theft of their baggage inside their cars while on board the train, with the exclusion of professional articles, portable electronic equipment, cameras and photographic materials, valuables, cash, credit and similar cards. Coverage is given up to a maximum of 1,040 euro per car; for each suitcase/bag 260 euro, while for other items, the market value up to a maximum of 260 euro per item.

At main stations you can rent a car from the hire firms (AVIS, EUROPCAR, HERTZ, MAGGIORE). Holders of the Eurostar Club and Programma in Treno cards are entitled to special discounts.

North-south connections:

South-north connections:
High season: from 21 August to 4 September 2004
Standard: all the other days

Exceptions:
A) Rome - Bolzano and Rome - Brunico/Bruneck routes:
